Loan and EMI Planning Guide India

Understand EMI, total interest, tenure, prepayment, and affordability before taking a loan.

EMI is only one part of loan cost

A low EMI can be attractive, but it often comes from a longer tenure. Longer tenure usually increases total interest, even if the monthly payment feels manageable.

Always compare total repayment, processing fees, insurance add-ons, foreclosure charges, and the flexibility to prepay.

Check affordability before eligibility

Banks may approve a loan larger than what is comfortable for your household budget. Your own affordability should account for rent, school fees, insurance, emergency savings, and monthly investments.

As a practical rule, keep total EMIs at a level where you can still save and handle income disruptions.

Use prepayment carefully

Prepayments can reduce interest sharply, especially in the early years of a reducing-balance loan. But do not use emergency money for prepayment unless your cash buffer is already stable.

Compare whether a lump sum should reduce EMI or shorten tenure. Shortening tenure often saves more interest.

Action checklist

  • - Compare EMI and total interest.
  • - Check processing fees and foreclosure rules.
  • - Test a higher-rate scenario before borrowing.
  • - Keep emergency savings separate.
  • - Review prepayment benefits each year.
