How to use the Student Education Loan EMI Calculator
Estimate education-loan EMI, repayment time, total interest, and optional extra-payment savings. Tax treatment depends on your country and circumstances. This tool is designed for Indian users who want a quick estimate before comparing options, speaking with an advisor, or committing money. It helps you compare monthly affordability, total interest, repayment pressure, and the effect of tenure before taking a loan.
What this calculator answers
How much an education loan grows during the course and moratorium period, and what EMI will start after graduation.
Practical tip
Paying just the interest during the course keeps the balance from growing. Interest paid on education loans may qualify for deduction under Section 80E in the old tax regime.
Worked example
On a Rs 10 lakh loan at 10%, roughly Rs 1 lakh of simple interest can build up each year of study and moratorium if it is not paid. Over a 4-year course plus 1 year of moratorium, that is close to Rs 5 lakh added before the first EMI.
Formula and methodology
For reducing-balance loans, EMI = P x R x (1 + R)^N / ((1 + R)^N - 1), where P is principal, R is monthly interest rate, and N is total number of months.
WealthWiseGrow keeps calculator inputs private in your browser wherever possible. The result should be treated as an educational estimate and reviewed against the official product terms, bank quote, fund document, tax rule, or salary structure that applies to your situation.
Example interpretation
For example, a Rs 10 lakh loan at 10% annual interest for 5 years has a very different total cost from the same loan stretched to 7 years. The longer tenure may look comfortable every month, but the extra interest can reduce your long-term savings capacity.
After calculating, compare at least two scenarios: a conservative case and an optimistic case. This helps you avoid planning around a single number that may not survive changes in income, interest rates, inflation, tax rules, or market returns.
Key assumptions
- - Interest is compounded monthly unless the calculator specifically states otherwise.
- - Processing fees, insurance, foreclosure charges, stamp duty, and bank-specific fees may not be included in the base result.
- - Changing tenure can reduce EMI but may increase total interest substantially.
Common mistakes
- - Choosing the lowest EMI without checking total interest.
- - Ignoring prepayment rules and foreclosure charges.
- - Comparing loans only by interest rate instead of total cost.
